Men cleared

PA Wellington Three men who were marshals at an anti-Springbok tour march organised by the C.O.S.T. organisation have been cleared of charges of assaulting the police. Francis Colin Wevers, aged 34, an advisory officer; Eruera Te Whiti Nia, aged 32, a storeman-packer; and Alexander Shaw, aged 31, an assistant secretary, pleaded not guilty to two joint charges of assaulting the police on August 8 when they appeared in the District Court at Wellington yesterday.

After hearing the evidence, Judge Kerr said he was satisfied that the officers concerned had been pushed and assaulted, but he was not satisfied that the defendants had done it.

An application for costs made by Shaw on the ground of financial losses was declined.
