13 children drown in pools

PA Wellington Thirteen children under five years of age had drowned in private swimming pools this year, said Mr Jack Harrop, the safety controller of the Accident Compensation Corporation. As well, six in the same age-group had drowned in farm troughs, sheep dips, or drains, and three in rivers or streams. Clear messages to adults were to supervise children closely near any waterway, beach or pool: to give tuition in swimming and water safety; and to fence effectively any private pool areas and provide covers for the pools, he said.

As far as private pools were concerned, the Accident Compensation Corporation recommended the booklet, “Guide to Swimming Pool Protection,” prepared and released by the Water Safety Council. This offered specifications for the more common types of fencing and covers and the quality of materials to be used. It included advice on proper pool maintenance and the correct handling of pool chemicals. The booklet is available from the safety controller, Accident Compensation Corporation, private bag. Wellington, and local branches of the Water Safety Council.
