Ryan dominates cycling

Colin Ryan the sprinter became Colin Ryan the attacker and bridger of gaps in the combined track cycling meeting at Denton Park on Wednesday evening' ■ The Australian and New Zealand professional sprint champion not only just won virtually all the Air New Zealand-spon-sored events he contested, but he annihilated the 8000 m field. After doing much of the donkeywork in splitting the field — only Greg Cox and Steve Doherty survived with him — Ryan flew from the banking to bury the other two by some 30m.

Earlier Ryan had dominated his events, winning as he pleased in the 1200 m and the “Devil take the hindmost,” and coming through from scratch for the 800 m. Leading out or chasing — it seemed to matter not to Ryan. The amateur results were otherwise well spread around, Craig Adair winning once at his second meeting of the season, but the best-performed was the

veteran. Alan Hood, with two wins. One unusual feature was that the three Steele brothers had a win apiece. Much the same happened in the novice events. Craig Fenton s initiative won him the long race; George McAloon got the 450 m when Darrel Kircher, first across the line, failed a gear check; but the most consistent placings were by Robert Campbell, a first and two seconds in his first starts of the season. .
