Price of bread to rise again
Most loaves of bread will cost 2c more from Sunday. Christchurch bakeries are increasing their prices for the seventh time this year, to compensate for wage increases under' new award agreements. Prices for loaves of Sunshine and SX bread will rise 2c on Sunday. C.E. Boon, Ltd, will also add 2c to the price of its Freshbake loaves but plans to drop freight charges so that rural deliveries will not change over-all in price. J ‘- Buns and rolls will also cost 2c more a dozen.
The manager of Sunshine Bakery. Mr R. C. G. Curragh. said that all local bakeries would probably increase prices to compensate for the 9.7 per cent wage increase in the bakers' award. A standard unsliced Sunshine loaf which cost 55c on January 1 would now. sell -for 70c. The general manager of Stacey and Hawker which makes SX bread, Mr M. Horne, said wage increases for clerical workers and engineers had also been responsible for the price rise. The management of Norths Bakery. Ltd. could not be reached yesterday.
