Gear Meat closing
Sir,—The implications of the resolution by Gear Meat workers to accept the closing Of their works are made apparent by the resolution itself. This stated that “In the light of the election results and the reelection of a hostile Government no further action is to be taken on reopening the Petone works.” Had Labour been elected, the union would have pressed for taxpayers’ money to subsidise an uneconomic works. It is also significant that the Rixen fiasco has collapsed. In the snap election of 1951 after the waterfront strike a unionist was quoted as saying “Let us put Holland out and Nash in and then we can line Nash up.” The unions lost that election too.—Yours, etc.. J. F. GARVEY. December 7, 1981.
