New system eliminates unwieldy entries

The introduction of a $2O nomination fee and the elimination of an acceptance fee for all races with a total stake of less than ?3000 has had a culling effect on the

size of the entries for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting to be held at Riccarton next Saturday. One person who should appreciate the new system, which has been operated by most racing clubs in Auckland and Waikato areas for some time now. is the handicapper. Although handicaps for the meeting must be declared tomorrow morning — acceptances close at noon — the set-weight maiden events will cause him no problems. The maximum number to be weighted in the other seven races on Saturday’s nine-race programme is 27 and the minimum 10. If there are no defections on the entries as they stand at present, by acceptance time a ballot to bring the numbers back to the safety limit of 18 would only be necessary in four races, including the two maiden events.
