Study of 35-hour week
PA Auckland New Zealand Steel will prepare an investigation paper on the feasibility of a shorter working week, for employees at its Glenbrook mill. This was one of the terms in two new agreements negotiated, one with the Engineers’ Union, representing 600 engineers at the plant, and one with the combined unions, representing 600 storemen, electricians, and other workers. The combined unions’
agreement and the engineers’ agreement have been settled. Both unions have asked for a 35-hour working week. The company has responded by undertaking ■ to investigate the effects this proposal would have on,, plant operation. The ‘ paper will be completed within six months, and the union representatives will make submissions on the proposal to the company. Both agreements also provide for a 4.3 c an hour catchup on pay rates, with' the 5
per cent wage order plus another 10 per cent.
