Arrest after shotgun blast
A man has been arrested after a shotgun blast was fired up the driveway of a Sumner house where a party was being held on Saturday evening. One party-goer had been struck by pellets, but had not been seriously injured because of the range, a police spokesman said. He said that a single shot had been fired after a group
in a car had “milled around" at the bottom of the driveway. Details on the background of the incident w r ere not available yesterday. The car sped off, but was stopped by a police patrol about an hour later. The arrested man, aged 23. will appear in the District Court this morning charged with discharging a firearm
with reckless disregard for safety. Five “punk rockers” were arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour on Saturday evening after a disturbance outside the D.B. Gladstone Tavern on Durham Street. Detectives of the Papanui C. 1.8. are still investigating the theft of $6OOO worth of equipment from the Red-
wood Service Centre, near the corner of the Main North Road and Prestons Road, on Friday night. The haul included a water blaster valued at $l6OO, a compressor, seven new batteries, four tyres, grinding machines, and a quantity of mechanic’s tools and other gear. The police believe a van or truck was used in the burglary.
