Quail Island improvements

Quail Island's 4.5 km walkway. and a deep-water wharf, which were opened yesterday, would be of social and economic benefit to Canterbury said the Direc-tor-General of Lands (Mr P. H. C. Lucas). The new wharf would permit the refund of a ferry service from Lyttelton to the island he said at the opening ceremony. “Many more people will be able to enjoy the island's history, which is rich from its role as a food collection source for Maori people in pre-European days, to early farming, quarrying, use as a quarantine station leprosarium, ships’ graveyard, and hard-labour camp.” Many people took advantage of fine weather to travel to the island by-the special ferry service, and to test the walkway.. which takes about two hours to 'complete.

- Mr Lucas commended the Canterbury District Walkway Committee and the other groups responsible for the walkway, which circles the island. The Lyttelton Harbour Board, Lands and Survey Department, and others, had co-operated to build the wharf.
