Knock-out cricket
Two senior batsmen, Max Bremner (St Albans) and Wayne Higgins (Sydenham), were treated and discharged at Christchurch Hospital yesterday after being injured while playing in the first round of the Canterbury inter-club one-day cricket competition. Bremner was struck on the nose when trying to hook the New Zealand pace bowler, Richard Hadlee (High School Old Boys), at Hagley Oval. Stitches were inserted in the wound and Bremner resumed
his innings after the fall of the eighth wicket, bravely playing out Hadlee’s final over. When Bremner arrived at the hospital Higgins was already awaiting treatment. He had been hit on the side of the head by a ball from David Trist (Lancaster Park) at Lancaster Park Oval. The umpires promptly moved the match to the pitch used for the completion of a two-day championship match on Saturday. Higgms too, batted again later.
