Farms revert to Maoris
PA Wellington The Maori Land Board has approved the return of more than $1 million worth of Maori-owned farmland to its owners. The land comprises two sheep farms that were man- . aged by the Maori Affairs . Department until economic viability was reached. One farm is the 1137- , hectare Hakurenga station at ; Waipiro Bay, 111 km north of \ Gisborne, which is being re- ; turned to an incorporation of 1 owners. The station carries i 5100 ewes and 380 cattle. The : department started developing the land in 1968 and the
property is now worth more than sl' million. The other farm is Tapuwae station in North Hokianga. a joint farming-fores-try venture carrying 3600 ewes with 245 hectares in Pinus radiata. Tapuwae station will be returned next July. Since 1978 the Maori Land Board has returned 12 development schemes worth about $l7 million to owner control. Next year the board plans to return another $25 million of Maori land in the form of 15 stations comprising 22.500 hectares carrying 118,000 ewes and 8000 cattle.
