Police quiz prisoner
The police will question a Mount Eden prisoner in connection with the killing of Alicia O’Reilly, aged six, on August 16 last year. Detectives investigating the sex-related killing of the girl interviewed the man, aged 27, who is awaiting trial on sex charges, about two months ago and took pubic hair and blood samples from him, the police said. Detective Inspector B. Matthews said yesterday that he now had the results of tests on the samples which put the man among 10 per cent of the population with hair and blood type similar
to samples found at the Canal Road, Avondale, death scene. The man, who had denied involvement in the killing, would be questioned again after charges now against him had been dealt with in court, Mr Matthews said. Inquiries would be made with relatives and at the man’s former workplace. “At this stage we have eliminated almost everybody,” Mr Matthews said. “As people come up on sex offences, we will continue to take samples and check to see if they can be eliminated from the inquiry.” .
