Australian wins junior table tennis
■ A holidaying Australian, Paul Green, won the under-21 Canterbury junior summer table tennis tournament at the Selwyn Street Hall, Christchurch, yesterday. The 20-year-old Sydneysider used a deft all-round touch to beat Wellington’s Robert Kerr. 21-15; 21-15. in the final. Kerr, a New Zealand junior representative, lashed out with some well-angled forehand drives but overall he could not match the consistency of his more experienced opponent. Kerr, aged 15. had earlier accounted for a former leading Canterbury player, Mark Clasper, who now lives in Palmerston North, in a three-set semi-final. ■ Green, a New South Wales state A-grade player, was drawn directly to the final after winning his round-robin section at the expense of Canterbury’s seventh-ranked junior, Nigel Maynard. The top local hopes, Tim Hanrahan and John Richards, lost out in Kerr’s round-robin section. The second-ranked Canterbury junior, Lyndon White, lost to Clasper. Canterbury’s No. 1 junior girl. Monique Van der Aa. made a clean sweep of the round-robin under-21 and under-17 girls' titles. White got some compensation for his under-21 loss by beating the No. 3 Canterbury junior. Grant McCarroll, in straight sets jn the under-17 boys’ final. • Results.— Boys. — Singles: Un’der-21 semi-finals: Kerr beat Clasper. 21-13, 18-21, 21-15. Final: Green beat Kerr. 21-15, 2115. ’
