Gear workers accept closing
PA Wellington Geat Meat workers who lost their jobs more than two weeks ago after the surprise announcement of the plant’s closing, have given up their efforts to have the works reopened. After a closed meeting of about 100 Petone workers in the Lower Hutt Horticultural Hall yesterday morning, the secretary of the West Coast branch of the Meat Workers'
Union (Mr Ken Findlay) said that the workers had accepted the closing as final and would now concentrate on securing a just redundancy deal. Mr Findlay said the meeting had passed a resolution stating: “In the light of the election results, and the reelection of. a hostile government, no further action is to be taken on reopening the Petone works.” The resolution endorses the resolution of the Freezing Workers' national management committee, and calls on all freezing workers to support “our just claims for adequate redundancy payments for all Petone workers, including seasonal workers.”
