Record for painting
PA Nelson A John Gully watercolour of Mount Richmond, near Nelson, sold for a record price of $15,000 at auction in Auckland on Thursday evening. The 1871 painting was bought by an anonymous South Island buyer. Mr Brian Groshinski, man-aging-director of the auctioneering company, McArthur and Company, said the price of $15,000 was the highest paid at auction in New Zealand for a painting by a
nineteenth century topographical artist. The previous highest price for a Gully was $12,000 paid in Australia last June. The painting was sent for sale from Manchester where it had been since Gully sent it to England in 1871. He originally sold the painting for £6O. Oils on canvas by Gottfried Lindauer and Charles Blomfield sold at the same auction for $5500 and $3OOO respectively. A pastel by Frances Hodgkins sold for $3lOO.
