30km classic to Greg Clark
Greg Clark (St Martins), runner-up in last year’s D.B. Great Westland marathon, won the annual 30km Gebbies Classic hill race on a circuit from the Sign of the Kiwi yesterday. Clark's winning ttme of Ihr 47m 17s was slower then his own time of 1:46:22 when he was 6th last year and over eight minutes slower than Peter Renner’s record set last year, but was a good effort considering the warm temperature. Second was New Brighton runner Murray Dellow, with University’s Frank Nolan in third place. The early pacemaker, Gerald Stanley, held on for 4th place, while Greg Cormack (New Brighton) ran one of his best races to come sth. Some of Canterbury's top runners, such as Peter Renner, Tom Birnie. Gavin Donaldson,
Bruce Rattray, Frank Brookes, and Warren Sheddan, used the run for training, as did some of the slower runners. No women were among the 70 finishers, mainly because of the Edmond Tang race being held on the preceding day. Results: Clark 1:47:17. 1; Dellow 1:48:21, 2; Stanley 1:53:57, 4; Cormack 1:54:20. 5; D. Cameron (Cashmere) 1:54:32, 6 and first veteran; C. Dowie (North Canterbury) 1:54:33, 7; P. Renner (New Brighton) 1:55:54, 8; W. Sheddan (Olympic) and Frank Brookes (Toe H) 1:55:55, equal 9; R. Waters (Rovers) 1:58:04, 11 and second veteran; L. Marley (New Brighton) 1:59:57, 12; B. Sullivan (Olympic) 2:00:59, 13 and third veteran; B. Harrison (Olympic) 2:01:52, 14; J. Instone (QE) 2:02:12, 15 and 4th veteran.
