days in Auckland, brief time in the army and his Work for amateur theatre. Twenty years in broadcasting were interrupted only by an illness and long convalescence in the 19305. At the age of 55 he gave up announcing to become a professional actor with the New Zealand Plavers. Three strenuous years later he was in England where he played a number of parts in film and television. Further offers were turned down in favour of a return to New Zealand, where he felt his future lay.. Eventually he was asked to compile an afternoon programme for older listeners — the “Appointment with John. Gordon" through which he. became so well known both here and overseas. Readings of John Gordon s autobiography continue lor the next fortnight. Concertos Concert Programme lis-. teners were treated to three violin concertos by British composers earlier this week and on the Tuesday at 8.35 p.m. there is another — the Elgar Violin Concerto in B minor. Op. 61. Antony Hopkins in his current 8.8. C. "Discovering Music" series talks about the Elgar Concerto first. This is followed by a performance with Yehudi Menuhin as soloist with the New Philharmonic conducted by Sir Adrian Boult.
