‘Vote-catching’ alleged
Labour Party activists are trying to turn the proposed extension to the Christchurch Airport runway into a votecatchmg election issue, according to the Minister of Tourism (Mr Quigley). “The Christchurch Airport is an asset we are all proud of and its development is more important than party politics," he said. Mr Quiglev was responding to a report in “The Press." of Saturday about a letter from the Christchurch City Council to all South Island political candidates "seeking assistance m prompting an immediate decision from the Government over the runway issue" •The Deputy Mayor (Cr
Rex Lester) and the Labourdominated Christchurch City Council are rumour-monger-ing. The airport runway will be extended and Cr Lester knows it.” Mr Quigley sain "Cr Lester has attended a number of meetings with me on this matter and knows exactly what the decision is For him to now say that it was never the Labour council’s intention to try to maim this an election issue is pum hypocrisy." ’Mr Quiglev said that the Government had already agreed to the Harewood Road deviation anti would not have done so if mere was any doubt about the runwav extensions proceeding.
