Long wait for Kiri to enter golf club
The New Zealand soprano, Kiri Te Kanawa, a keen golfer, has been waiting for more than a year to become a member of .Richmond Golf Club at Sudbrook Park in Surrey, according to a “Sunday Express” columinist, Lady Olga Maitland. Miss Te Kanawa, who sang at the wedding of the Prince and Princess, of Wales, was quoted as Shying that the club, near her home, did not encourage women members.
An unidentified club member said,. “We are a very chauvinistic club. We have more than 500 male members but there is a limit of 65 on the women.
“It is really a question of dead men’s shoes — or in this case, dead women’s shoes.”
Miss Te Kanawa’s ■ husband, Mr Desmond Park, is a member of the club.
