When Bruce Irving, of Lancaster Park (above), bowled the Sydenham wicket-keeper, Ash Hart, at Sydenham Park on Saturday he became only the second Christchurch cricketer to have taken 10(10 senior wickets. Irving’s club-mates, in all grades, were delighted at his achievement. The off-spinner has served Lancaster Park admirably for 26 years and his cheerfulness and loyalty to the club have made him an especially popular figure. Typically, Irving was modest in his moment of triumph. He spoke of the support he said he had had from the captains under whom he had played. He said that they had had the confidence in him to bowl him for long spells and at times when many captains would have reverted to their mediumpacers. Irving also spoke of the help received from team members, whose comradeship had been a constant encouragement, and from his club. Irving timed his feat to perfection: Lancaster Park has just completed its centennial celebrations.
