Haka station to be subdivided

The partnership which purchased Hakataramea station in South Canterbury three years ago after the Government decided not to buy the station is to be disbanded and the 8900 hectare property subdivided, one of the partners. Mr M. G. N. Rattray, announced last week. He said that the property would be divided initially into five lots with further subdivision likely in the future. It is understood, however, that the number of blocks into which it will now be divided could be seven. The other members of the group which bought the station were the . present

chairman of the Wool Board. Mr J. D. Mcllraith, and Mr P. W. Hayman. It had always been the intention to divide the station initially into three family entitlements, Mr Rattray said. After that it would be up to each family what they did. The present intention was to subdivide into five blocks and further subdivision was likely later, he said. Mr Rattray said that a survey and valuation of the property were being undertaken at the moment and the whole exercise was expected to be completed by about the' middle of next year. The general areas had been agreed to and town and country planning approval gained. Asked whether the subdivision meant that future sales of small units might be made to other parties, Mr Rattray told the “Timaru Herald” that as far as his position was concerned the answer was “no.” Questioned last weekend about why the property was being split up into five blocks instead of three, he said that this was a question that should be put to the other partners. Mr Mcllraith said that two young men, who were not immediate members of his family, were being given a chance to take up blocks and he had also given the previous manager of the whole station a short term lease of part of his family allocation of the property — this had been taken up in April. However, enough property would be retained to give members of his immediate family a chance to take up a block of land if they so desired. Mr Hayman said that the property could be subdivided into seven titles altogether, including two titles for his family’s part of the station.
