Tillage seminar
The second national technical conservation tillage seminar, sponsored by Monsanto, will begin in Christchurch next Tuesday. The first seminar was held in November, 1979, also in Christchurch, and its main achievement was to be instrumental in initiating various lines of study among New Zealand agricultural scientists. The 1981 seminar will be the occasion for the results of several of these studies to be made public for the first time and for progress reports on several other areas of interest to users and researchers into conservation tillage in New Zealand. The seminar has been divided into a number of sessions with common themes. They include hill country conversion utilising conservation tillage techniques, some farmer experiences with conservation tillage on the Canterbury plains, equipment development, rural extension, the earthworm pesticide interface, economics, soil, stubble and fertilisers and a general session to cover subjects of broader interest. An afternoon field trip to a Te Pirita property is also included on the first day’s programme. While many people will want to attend all three days, Monsanto have made provision for attendance on one or only two days so that people can select topics according to their, areas of individual interest. Registration is essential and inquiries about the seminar should be directed to: Monsanto New Zealand, Ltd, P.O. Box 13442, Christchurch, or telephone 796-996.
