Taxation
Sir—Some of T.R.I.M.’s supporters think that taxing the rich more than the poor is communism. Others believe that turnover tax will collect so much from rich tax-dodgers that all the rest of us will be better off. Turnover tax will certainly be paid by everyone who does not pay tax now. Children, home-makers, the elderly, sick and unemployed will pay turnover tax on their needs at the same rate as millionaires. Just where does T.R.I.M. want to cut government spending? What is its policy on capital gains, on excessive wealth, on minimum income? I do not believe that T.R.I.M. is merely promoting an idea whose consequences it has not thought through. I believe members of T.R.1.M., backed by Z.A.P., are deliberately promoting a scheme to give themselves a free licence to profiteer and avoid their social responsibilities.—Yours, etc ALAN WILKINSON. T Pfifipr N.Z. Values Party. November 18, 1981.
