Mr W. H. Collins arrived in New Zealand from Cornwall, England, in 1867. He lived in Waimate for a short time but reports of gold, mining attracted him to the West Coast to try his luck. After four years he resettled in Timaru and, in 1878, moved to Ashburton where he became manager of a timber company. Ten years later he founded W. H. Collins, Ltd.
