Vardon Trophy again goes to Williamson

The Canterbury Freyberg golf captain, John Williamson, will have an empty space on his mantelpiece but only briefly. Last year, the Christchurch club golfer was the inaugural winner of the Canterbury association’s P.G.F. Vardon Trophy. This year, Williamson will be the recipient of the trophy again. The presentation will take place at the annual presidents’ and secretaries’ dinner at the Charteris Bay club on November 24. The Vardon Trophy is awarded to the player" who scores the lowest stroke average, with scores being corrected to a course rating of 72, in tournaments nominated by the Canterbury association. Last year, Williamson had a stroke average of 74.9. He improved this year and had a stroke average of 73.8 which left him a comfortable winner as several of his main opponents failed to play the minimum requirement of rounds (20). Williamson’s retention of

the trophy will be well received in golf circles. He won the Ellesmere open and was runner-up in the Templeton open. A semi-finalist in this year’s New Zealand amateur championship, Williamson has been a grand supporter of golf events in the province. He has been consistent and successful and with that goes a pleasant personality and unfaulted sportsmanship.
