Defender system opposed
PA Wellington The Law Society Opposes the establishment of a public defender system, as suggested in a. Justice Department discussion paper. The society’s president, Mr J. T. Eichelbaum, Q.C., said that under such a system work would be carried out
"by what, in effect would be a State department.” In New Zealand the proved tradition was that defence work was carried out by a fully independent legal pro-, fession, he. said,' ’ ' While he welcomed the paper as a valuable exercise, containing a number ~of for-ward-looking ideas, Mr Eichelbaum . said talk of ex-
tensions and improvements in legal aid was “pie in the sky” while funding remained at the present pitiful level. A huge injection of funds was required either by increasing State aid or funding legal aid by a scheme for payment of interest on solicitors’ trust accounts by the trading bank's, said Mr Eichelbaum.
