‘Evil’ story
NZPA London Libya's State-run news agency. Jana, said yesterday that rumours of an assassination attempt against the Libyan leader. Muammar Gadaffi, -that spread through world capitals during the day had been planted by American intelligence agencies. “These rumours, spread by the American Administration with deviousness and reflecting a venemous and evil mentality, were received in Tripoli with laughter and ridicule,” the agency said. It said Colonel Gadaffi had yesterday had meetings with visiting Turkish and Yemeni officials. Rumours of an assassination attempt followed a “Time" magazine report that a high-ranking French official put forward a plan to kill Colonel Gadaffi to the Reagan Administration last February. The White House and the former French Foreign Minister. Jean Francois-Poncet, denied the report. Foreign diplomats in Tripoli said they had heard nothing to suggest that “anything out of the ordinary has happened." and the situation was calm.
