New Rolls for late 80s
NZPA London Rolls-Royce is negotiating with at least two European bodywork specialists over the development of a more economical model for the late 1980 s. The company has said that negotiations are taking place with Karmann. a West Ger-
many company, and Pininfarina. of Italy, which styled the Camargue, head of’the Rolls-Royce range and priced at 83.122 pounds ($189,518). Three or four other-com-panies are also involved in talks on the planned new’ model including British concerns. according to the “Sunday Telegraph.” The deal on offer is for the development of a lightweight car body. The company which wins the contract-, worth several million pounds will develop the body to tne "tooling" stage, which means it will design and make the equip-
rnent needed to make the body. Production of. the body will take place in Britain. Rolls-Royce cars is based at Crewe. Cheshire. The secret design has been produced by Rolls-Royce, which is also designing the chassis and a new six-cylin-der engine, believed to be smaller and more economical than those now in use. Rolls-Royce said: "We are talking to a number of potential suppliers on development work and tooling and no contracts have been signed.
