Keep dry, says candidate
The Social Credit candidate for Papanui, Mr Tom Langridge, has used a loudhailer' to tell people not to listen to him. ; . Mr Langridge made the appeals one evening recently after rain dampened the electorate and the . enthusi'asm of all but a few people in the Bishopdale area who came out of their houses to talk to him as he went from street corner to street corner. To one woman, Mr Langridge said that he agreed with her that abortions in New Zealand were getting out of hand, but he would not force his point of view on people. Instead, he believed there should be a referendum on the issue. Mr Langridge said that the main issues in the electorate were tax, rates, and unemployment.
He reassured a couple who said they were Social Credit supporters that personal income tax would be held at a flat rate of 28 per cent for people earning less than $lB,OOO a year. Exemptions could be built up as the economy improved, he said. People who earned more than $lB,OOO a year would pay 48 per cent tax under Social Credit. Personal income tax would not increase for overtime or secondary employment, which would be included in the earnings and taxed at the flat rate. Mr Langridge said that if a person was earning more than $lB,OOO a year and wanted to invest some of it. the investment would not be taxed if it was put into a savings bank or approved regional bank.
