Lewis Pass vandalism
Sir.—The remarks of Constable Fletcher ("The Press." November 16). give cause for alarm. The owners of the cars left al the Lewis Pass car park were pursuing a lawful activity. As a result of vandalism they, and future walkway users, are advised to make alternative travel arrangements — some of which are impractical, and a waste of time and fuel.. Besides, public transport is not timetabled to enable maximum use of one’s holiday time for tramping trips. One would expect more positive action from the police. More patrols should be considered or even irregular surveillance by police officers. Perhaps the walkway administrators may have to arrange for surveillance during peak holiday periods. The public should not be deterred from using an expensive public facility merely because of perceived isolation from residential areas. The solution requires a more positive approach, not a series of negative, armchairtype platitudes and impractical suggestions. — Yours, etc., M. P. NEESON. November 16. 1981.'-;
