Muscular dystrophy is a genetic or hereditary disease. Unfortunately, unlike .some other hereditary diseases it is very hard to identify in the unborn child by taking foetal blood samples, for muscular dystrophy does not show in the blood. It is widely assumed that the disease . is linked with a malfunction of a gene on the X chromosome. Thus a way of detecting muscular dystrophy before birth could be to investigate the X chromosomes directly to look for abnormality. A London research team has been building up a library of human X chromosomes and one of the researchers talks about their work on the 8.8. C. science programme this week — Concert radio, 7.30 tonight.
