F.O.L.’s Chile ban ‘must be lifted’
PA Marton The Federation of Labour’s bah on trade with Chile should be lifted immediately, the Social Credit Leader (Mr Beetham) has said at Bulls. Mr Beetham, who also committed Social Credit to the A.N.Z.U.S. defence treaty during an election campaign speech, said the motivation behind the ban rested not on principles, but on “internal political consideration.” Where trade unions were now free again in Chile the ban was ludicrous.' “The ban is in fact a purely political one and will
in all probability be removed if the present National Government is,, defeated at the polls,” Mr Beetham told an attentive audience of 50, people. Social Credit strongly supported a continuing commitment to A.N.Z.U.S., calling it New Zealand’s best defence. He cited the reason for concern as the growing Soviet naval presence in,the Pacific and Indian oceans. Mr Beetham said that the planned Aramoana aluminium smelter was not and never would be a viable proposition.
