PROFILE: Christchurch Central, which covers the heart of Christchurch City, includes lower-income to middleincome housing, and commercial and industrial areas. It has a high flatting and student population. It is a strong Labour seat, requiring a 20.5 per cent swing to National to change hands. Social Credit was ahead of National in the 1979 by-election, when the seat was won by Mr Geoffry Palmer. In 1978? Labour had a majority of almost 6000 votes. 1979 results: Labour, 6149; Social Credit, 1759; National, 1634. In addition to the three main parties, Mr W. E. C. Iversen is standing for the Clients Party, which is a “new wave” band. x
