Rare beetle found

PA Dunedin Six beetles of the rare velvety brown scarab species have been discovered in the Hector mountains area of Central Otago. Before the week-end trip by six Otago insect hunters, the only specimen of the beetle to be discovered was found in the same area in 1938 by Mr M. Foord, of Dunedin, who led the latest hunt. The insects were discovered feeding on mountain plants about 1800 metres above sea level.

One of the specimens will go to the Otago Museum and the others to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr Foord said that larvae discovered by the party would be given to a Dunedin entomologist, who will try to rear them to maturity. The brown scarab beetle, although part of the same family as the sacred scarab beetle of ancient Egypt, is most closely linked to the Cromwell chaffer beetle.
