P.M. on Chile ban
NZPA political reporter / New Plymouth The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said last evening that he believed New. Zealand would end its trade ban on Chile, blit he did not want a confrontation with trade unions bn the issue. Answering a question, Mr Muldoon said the ban was becoming ridiculous and was preventing people from getting jobs. But legislation would mean a confrontation “and I
don’t want the total economy of this country-disrupted, and by that I mean the exports.” Earlier, Mr Muldoon said the president of the Federation of Labour, Mr W. J. Knox, had been “brought up in the school of hard knocks, and never got over it.” The Socialist Unity Party was controlling trade unionists, Mr Muldoon said. “Ken Douglas (the F.O.L.’s secretary) is in the chair pulling the strings and Jim Knox is the puppet that is dancing.”
