Swimming pool jargon
Some terms the swimming pool owner should be familiar with are: • pH — the acidity or alkalinity balance of pool water. @ Total alkalinity — the actual amount of alkali salts present .in pool water. • Acid demand — the amount of acid, required to lower the pH and total alkalinity of pool water to the correct level, ® Hardness — the presence of dissolved mineral solids such as calcium and magnesium salts.
® Scale —a crustlike deposit of mineral salts on heating coils and pool surfaces. 9 Residual — the amount of disinfectant in the water. 9 Algae — minute plants that grow, in the water. 9 ppm — parts per million (in a pool, the parts of a chemical or mineral per million parts of water). 9 Test kit — contains testing solutions with comparative charts and calculations for determining water balance and amount of various chemicals present in pool water.
