Job reprieve for teachers
PA Wellington Primary school teachers facing loss of jobs because of falling rolls have been granted a temporary reprieve by the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington). The Minister said about 450 teachers who would have otherwise found themselves without a job at the beginning of next year would have their present jobs protected for a limited period, during which they would be required to find another posi-
tion within the entitlement of a school, Mr H. Smith, the president of the Christchurch Teachers’ College Trainees Association, said that although any job protection for primary school teachers was a good idea, the reprieve was only a short term measure and probably an election promise. Mr Wellington had not said what these 450 teachers would be doing, said Mr Smith, The jobs for which the teachers could apply were limited.
