Match axed to ‘rest police'
PA Timaru The Springbok match scheduled for Timaru on August 19 was cancelled primarily to give the police “a complete rest after the Christchurch test.” The explanation was given to a meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union’s management committee last evening by Mr Russell Thomas, a Rugby Union councillor. The explanation came more than three months after the. announcement'that
the match against South Canterbury was being cancelled for “security reasons ” The announcement caused a furore in Timaru, but there was no further explanation from the national body — until last evening. "I must emphasise it was a New Zealand Rugby Union decision, and neither the national nor the local police asked us to do it.” said Mr Thomas. The South Canterbury union received $BOOO compensation for expenses.
