‘Below cost’

Sir,—What continues to puzzle me, nay, even deeply concern me, is the constant stream of advertisements in the news media exhorting me to buy this, that or whatever from some trading emporium, all at “below cost.” Of course, never having been “in trade," I just fail to comprehend how all these wretched tradespeople manage to survive if they have to sell so much of their stock at "below cost.” Or is this “below cost" heartrending catch-cry all part of what has come to be known as the "hard sell” or the "soft sell?" Rather distasteful phrases. Can someone explain this phenomenon'.’ — Yours, etc., LES BOGREN. November 11, 1981.
