Chinese or European food

The “Golden Crown,” run by Mr and Mrs Colin Chin, is a new Chinese take-away, serving only Chinese meals — at reasonable prices. Using gas-fired woks, the Chins and two employees create 55 different, tasty combinations, some based on pork, others on beef and yet others on chicken. Some examples to suggest the flavour of the genuine Chinese meals are: chicken fried rice with cashew nuts, onions and peas ($5.60), sweet and sour pork with pineapple and pickles ($5) and black bean steak with black bean sauce and garlic ($5.50). Prices for the less exotic food are generally around $3.50. There are also prawn dishes, scrambled egg dishes and about half a dozen possible extras, such as pineapple or mushroom. ©ln the block behind Kentucky Fried is “Use Your Loaf,” a delicatessen cum salad bar and coffee shop. Light and bright in red and white, it is similar to a toprated establishment the proprietor, Chris Putze, has in London’s Piccadilly. Chris specialises in fresh salads and goods from high class bakeries “in town,” and he has a vast range of meats from Verkerk’s and Peach. The “beverages” are in four categories — “drinkies, sweeties, hotties and shakies.” Drinkies include pure fruit juices at 50c for small and 70c for large. Chris Putze says his place is "pretty popular” as a sitdown lunch spot and he also makes school lunches and does outside catering in the form of buffets.
