An asset to the Linwood district

A new retail shopping complex has just been completed in Linwood, with frontages to both Buckleys Road and Linwood Avenue. It consists of 12 ground floor retail shops and four first floor offices, developed in two stages by Fletcher Development and Construction, Ltd, and valued at $710,000. Special features include a quarry-tiled and land-scaped pedestrian arcade and 60 offstreet customer car parks behind Kentucky Fried Chicken in Linwood Avenue.

There are currently 8 businesses occupying the shops: the Bank of New Zealand: the Linwood Beauty Salon: Buck-wood Crafts: Bellis Bookshop: Use your Loaf Delicatessen and Coffee Bar; the Golden Crown Chinese Take-aways: the Finishing Touch plant shop: the Linwood Drapery and Variety Shop.

It is also proposed to establish sports, hardware and footwear shops in the centre. All but two of the shops in the development are new businesses attracted to the area, and the Bank of New Zealand has also leased office space on the first floor.

Fletchers regards the Linwood commercial district as one of the last remaining under-developed suburban shopping centres in Christchurch, and with the substantial population growth it says is anticipated in the area, the firm sees the new retail centre as having excellent future potential. Immediately opposite the shopping arcade off Buckleys Road is 32,000 sq. m of vacant commercial land on which Grocers United Stores, Ltd, propose to develop a supermarket. Fletchers anticipates that this will complement the new centre, ensuring that a full range of retail activities is provided.
