MR PETER BARROW Work badly needed

Young Avon electorate residents -are crying out for work, not dole money, in an electorate where unemployment hits harder than elsewhere in Christchurch, says Social Credit’s candidate, Mr Peter Barrow.

Avon is mainly a workers’ electorate and is being hit particularly hard by high rents, . high home interest rates, and rising costs. “Those in employment want a home and cannot buy one without going into debt way out of their depth, putting huge mmillstones round their necks in the form of interest,” he says. “People should be able’to buy their first home'at 3 per cent from the Housing Corporation.”

“Inflation on top of high rents reflects in the price of food and other commodities plus increasing taxation, power charges, and rates taking what little is left in the pay packet.” • Social Credit would unlock the door to a new society of prosperity for all by good housekeeping. “It is in the political field

because it sees so many people being hurt by an unjust, outdated economic system, a system which promotes profiteering ahead of the quality of individual living.”

Social Credit’s “new society” would feature selfemployed owner-operators, co-operative ventures, and worker participation and shareholding, says Mr Barrow.

, “All of this, will be built on incentives rather, than the wielding of a big stick,” he says. “We welcome the-.bene-fits of the new. technology

which will enable people to enjoy more leisure- and be creative.”

Mr Barrow, aged 60, is a self-employed market gardener who is standing in his sixth election for Social Credit. He is married, with five adult children.

His interests include'sport, especially golf, and politics. Mr Barrow has been president of Social Credit’s Canterbury Regional Council for six years and the past president of New Era. Credit Union and the marketing ■ section of the Canterbury -Growers’ Society.
