Council advocates composting

Riccarton Borough’s rubbish collection could be reduced by more than half if residents were encouraged to compost their own rubbish, the council’s community and development committee was told yesterday. .A report from the waste resources team set up by the council said that 56 per cent of the total rubbish collected could be composted by residents. A survey by the team among Riccarton businesses about the possibility of the council recycling kraft paper recieved a good response said the report. Kraft paper is used in corrugated cardboard cartons. Fifty-six out of 70 businesses approached had kraft paper -which the council could collect and sell. A commercial collection is already made on Riccarton Road. The committee recommended that the council further investigate organising such a collection.
