MR JIM BAKER. ‘National has the answers’
In a time of world recession the National Party offers the only solutions , to the crisis caused by the oil price increase in 1979, says National’s candidate for St Albans, Mr Jim Baker. The careful research and . planning which have gone into the growth strategy will broaden New Zealand's economic base and “ensure prosperity for all New Zealanders and a quality of life unparalleled in our history,” says Mr Baker. He says he is enthusiastic
about the Governments housing policy for first home buyers and home improvement loans. “This means that many of the gracious, well built older
houses in St Albans are taking on a new lease of life and that first-home buyers have all the advantages of living in an established area close to all amenities,” he says. The level of air pollution in Christchurch worries him, says Mr Baker, and he is pleased about the announcement by the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) of financial assistance for conversion to electric heating. “The first duty of any member of Parliament is to his electorate. Already as a candidate I have been able to help a number of people who
have come to me with problems,” he says. “In the House itself, my main interests would lie in the fields of education and housing.” Mr Baker, who is 47, and his wife, Rosamond, both come from families which have been established in Christchurch for several generations. Mr Baker was a teacher for 25 years in New Zealand and Britain. When he returned to Christchurch last year he took up selling land although he has also done some relieving teaching.
