Gold medals for wines

PA Auckland The first three gold medals of the 1981 national wine competi- . tion have been awarded on the second day of judging at the Showgrounds in Auckland. The golds went to Montana pale dry sherry, which has won many high awards in previous years, and to two vintage ports — Matua Valley ’Bl and Cooks '75. Ports made a comeback after several years in the doldrums. The sparkling classes were notable for the first entries for some years of wines made by the champagne process. No sparkling wines scored higher than silver. Table wines will be judged next week at the Chateau TongarirO. The following is the full list of awards in the fortified and sparkling classes.
