Bold century in Town-Country match
Apart from the century making effort of the opener, Peter Rattray, and a match saving 64 not out, by the former Canterbury player, Warren Eddington, it is doubtful if the cricket trial match at Timaru this weekend advanced the chances of Shell Cup hopefuls. Rattray carried his bat for 117 of the 269 for eight declared scored by Town. Country responded with 202 for seven declared. It was Rattray again in the second innings, who, in a batting practice situation, scored 46 before being stumped on a sharp chance by Barry Ward, the up-and-coming son of the
former New Zealand wicketkeeper, John Ward. Rattray gave four chances in his century and a difficult one with his first scoring shot in the second innings. But for all that he neatly gathered his runs on a placid pitch which deteriorated a little on the second day to give some late uneven bounce. He took 232 minutes in his first innings and scored 12 fours. Country reached 75 for three at stumps on the first day and then slipped to 112 for five when Eddington went in. It was soon 125 for seven before he was joined bv Bob Masefield. The pair added 77 in 94 minutes when
the innings was closed. Eddington faced 118 balls and hit 10 fours and a six. He also performed well -with the ball in the Town second innings, exploiting the pitch well to have one for nine off seven overs. Scores were: Town 269/8 dec.. (Rattray 117 not out, D. Farrant 27, D. Stead 25, R. Leggat 25, P. McEwen 23- Eddington 2/73, J. Varcoe 2/41) and 100/3 dec. (Rattray 46, V. Brown 29, McEwen 20 not out) drew’ , with Country 202/7 dec. (Eddington 64 not out, A Devlin 36, M. Parker 29, R. Masefield 24 not out; C. Thiele 2/40. S. McNally 2/27, Leggat 2/40.
