Second killing in revenge?

NZPA Belfast A Catholic man was shot dead in East Belfast early yesterday morning and the police said the killing had “all the hallmarks” of a reprisal slaying by Protestant extremists after the assassination of a Protestant member of the British Parliament the' day before. The man was shot in Lisbon Street, in a CatholicProtestant border area of the city, and was dead on arrival at hospital, a police spokesman said. No further details were immediately available. .

The killing followed up Saturday’s slaying when three Irish Republican Army guerrillas, two of them wearing halloween masks, the third a white handkerchief over his face, pushed past 60 horrified teenagers at a dance and shot dead the Rev. Robert Bradford and another man, the police said. The authorities warned of a virtual “civil war” in this strife-torn province and appealed for calm. Mr Bradford had represented the Protestant Unionist Party in the British Parliament since 1974. Murder of M.P., page 8
