Abortion group angers Values

The Values Party is angry that the Abortion Law Reform Association has ignored most Values candidates in a voting list prepared in Auckland. A.L.R.A.N.Z. has compiled a list, called -a “Guide to Good Voting,” in which it identifies the stand on the abortion issue of candidates in all electorates. One of the Values Party’s three leaders. Dr A. L. Wilkinson, said that he and other Values candidates were annoyed that they had not been canvassed because of the support they had given to A.L.R.A.N.Z. in the past. Values was the only party

which had a clear policy on abortion — that early abortion was' a matter to be decided by the women concerned. o*nly Values voters would be clearly supporting liberal abortion laws, he said. Values accepted that some voters preferred to support liberal candidates with a chance of winning in marginal seats. But there were many electorates where the contest was not between a liberal and a conservative. In these cases, people who favoured abortion could give the main parties “a prod in . the right direction” by voting Values.
