Wetlands loss harms birdlife

PA . Wellington The Minister for the Environment (Dr Shearer) has expressed concern about the loss of prime wetlands as a result of drainage schemes at Lake Wairarapa and on the Upper Taieri River in Otago.

In correspondence tabled at a Water Resources Council meeting in Wellington, Dr Shearer said many bird species became endangered because of extensive changes in their habitats.

The rapid reduction in New Zealand’s wetlands must be viewed with concern, he said.
