MR P. N. GOULD. ‘Man from Snowy River’
The Social Credit candidate for Waitaki, Mr P. N. Gould, is a “man fron Snowy River,” a Waimate farmer-cum-carpenter who has worked in the Waitaki Valley. He has had the interests of the Social Credit Party at heart for several years, he says. Mr Gould sees Waitaki as one of the strongest seats for Social Credit in the South Island. He has run a concentrated membershipp and fund-raising drive, and has developed a more forceful political approach. Mr Gould says that productivity has been increased many-fold in virtually every primary and secondary industry since the 19505. Other countries had done likewise, yet the average person was finding the fruits of that productivity less affordable than ever.
He believes Social Credit’s economic theory explains the reasons behind this phenomena and provides the only realistic solution.
Locally, the main issues are the quality of Parliamentary representation, the socio-economic conditions that were "strangling” all
rural electorates, the future of Twizel and the Twizel work-force, and the development of the Lower Waitaki, he says. Mr Gould, aged 40, married, with four children, was born in Waimate and educated at Waimate High School. He trained as a carpenter and moved to Otematata during the construction of the Benmore dam. Mr Gould worked in Christchurch and Aviemore and later was associated
with hydro schemes in Tasmania and on the Snowy River. He returned to New
Zealand in 1970, worked at Twizel, and then took up farming near Waimate on a 80ha property. He is fond of reading, mostly of a technical or semi-technical nature, and is interested in electronics and the older “softer” technologies that modern materials and scientific knowledge is making viable again. He holds an amateur transmitting licence.
